Vitamin E is known to enhance skin health, including membrane integrity and the aging process. But the relationship between serum vitamin E levels and the risk of chronic inflammatory skin diseases is yet not clear. A study evaluated the association between serum vitamin E levels and chronic inflammatory skin diseases by exploring PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases. Studies investigating serum vitamin E levels in patients with chronic inflammatory skin diseases were included.

The following observations were made:

  • Twenty articles were analyzed.
  • Patients with vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and acne demonstrated a lower vitamin E level than controls.

Thus, it was concluded that serum vitamin E levels are reduced in patients with vitiligo, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and acne. Hence, vitamin E status should be evaluated in patients with skin diseases to improve its level.
